M100 Youth Media Workshop 2010: Call for application! Seeking young journalist for European workshop from August 23 - 26 in Potsdam!

The M100 Sanssouci Colloquium, one of the largest gatherings of international journalists in Europe, invites young journalists from all over Europe to Potsdam to the M100 Youth Media Workshop taking place from 23 to 26 August 2010.

This year the workshop deals with the subject "Investigative Journalism in Europe". Investigative journalism is the most challenging form of journalism. Today, a decreasing number of media bodies are performing this type of reporting. In Germany, too, the number of journalists working in a truly "investigative" manner is relatively small. And, unfortunately, the situation in other European countries does not appear to be much better. Especially in younger democracies, journalists who pursue investigative journalism not only encounter tremendous resistance; they also often confront direct threats to their lives and livelihoods. However, since investigative journalism forms a major part of the so-called "fourth Estate" function that the media play in democratic societies - i.e. as a monitor of political bodies and companies - it is tremendously important to educate young journalists throughout Europe and to better familiarize them with the topic. The workshops, which are headed by professional investigative journalists, are designed to include both practical exercises (i.e., an introduction to investigative journalism, research practices, maintaining informants, modes of questioning, etc.) as well as theoretical matters (i.e., What function does investigative journalism fulfill and what role will it play in the digital media landscape of tomorrow?)

Conditions of participation:
Applications are welcome from young journalists between 18 and 26 from the whole of Europe. Please submit a brief text (max. 3 pages DIN A4), topic: "The force of the fourth Estate - investigative journalism in my country".

The Workshop takes place in co-operation with the European Youth Press (www.youthpress.org), the German investigative-journalism network known as "Netzwerk Recherche" and the German Commission for UNESCO in the Electronic
Media School in Potsdam. He is supported by the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburgand the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Please add your CV (incl. address and telephone number) and your journalistic
preference, i.e. print/online, video or radio. The workshop language is English.

The organisers of the Youth Media Workshop will bear the costs of accommodation and meals during the workshop. In addition there is a travel allowance of up to 250 Euro.

Please submit your application by July 6, 2010 by e-mail only to:
