Robert de Niro, Hilary Swank and Kylie Minogue to Receive Golden Camera Awards

58th Berlin International Film Festival 2008 with Madonna, Isabella Rossellini, Ben Kingsley and many more

For ten days this February, Berlin will once again be in the spotlight of the international film industry. Martin Scorsese and the Rolling Stones Open the Berlinale

Martin Scorsese – along with his new film “Shine a Light” – will join the Rolling Stones to open this year’s Berlin International Film Festival at the Berlinale Palast. It will mark the first time that a documentary film opens the festival. A total of 26 films from 19 countries are in competition this year, 18 of which are world premieres. Costa-Gavras named Berlinale Jury President

The Greek-French director and Oscar-winner Constantin Costa-Gavras will function as President of the International Jury at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. European Film Market Continues its Rapid Expansion

420 companies from 50 countries have already registered for the European Film Market (EFM) at the Berlinale – a significant increase from 2007. There are a total of 636 registered buyers, including an increased number from Korea as well as several new firms from Argentina, Australia and the USA. This year’s EFM program includes roughly 700 films, approximately 75 percent of which are market premieres. www.berlinale.de.
Berlinale Co-Production Market to Show 35 Projects from 25 Countries

35 selected motion picture projects from 25 countries will be presented at the 2008 Co-Production Market, including works by renowned directors such as Deepa Mehta, Agnieszka Holland and Andrei Zvyagintsev and featuring budgets of between 1 and 12 million euro. 350 up-and-coming filmmakers were chose out of a pool of over 3000 talented young professionals from 122 countries to attend the 6th annual Berlinale Talent Campus under the motto “Screening Emotions - Cinema’s Finest Asset.” The Berlin Today Award for short films will be handed out to one of the following three finalists: the Pakistani drama “Match Forever,” the Danish documentary “Berlin Hair Today” and the Finnish comedy “The Last Wash.” To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 2009 BTA will be held under the motto “My Wall”. European CRC Networks Co-production Meeting

German-Russian Co-production Meeting

For the second time, representatives of the Medienboard, Mitteldeutsche Filmförderung (Central German Film Funding) and the Filmförderungsanstalt (German Federal Film Board) will meet with representatives of Russian film funding to discuss co-production and financing opportunities with various producers and distributors from both countries. Two of this year’s nominees for best foreign-language film at the 80th Academy Awards in the Kodak Theater in L.A. were partially made in Berlin-Brandenburg: “Mongol” by Sergej Bodrow is representing Kazakhstan and “The Counterfeiters” by Stefan Ruzowitzky, most of which was filmed in Studio Babelsberg, is representing Austria.
