Cottbus, Germany, November 11-16, 2008 The Central and Eastern European film community recently came together over the course of six days at the 18th Annual Cottbus Film Festival. At the opening ceremonies, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier – one of the festival’s co-patrons – congratulated the festival on its 18th birthday and described Cottbus as second only to the Berlinale in terms of its importance as a German film festival. Brandenburg’s Minister President and festival co-patron Matthias Platzeck greeted guests at the festive opening gala held at the Cottbus Staatstheater. The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is a proud supporter of the Cottbus Film Festival and the Connecting Cottbus Co-production Market. The Cottbus Film Festival featured 136 films from 30 countries and was attended by 500 professionals and over 18,000 guests. These numbers attest to the festival’s ever-increasing status as a unique forum for current Eastern European cinema. On Wednesday, a German-Russian roundtable kicked off a new section entitled “Russischer Tag“ (Russian Day) and saw producers, directors, financiers and journalists from both countries call for the swift conclusion of the planned German-Russian Film Agreement. As part of the 10th edition of the Connecting Cottbus East-West Co-Production Market, 14 new feature film projects from 13 countries were presented. This year’s CoCo Best Pitch Award went to the Rumanian producers Tudor Giurgiu and Dan Chisu (Libra Film) for the presentation of their project “The Bear.”
