German jury selects "Toni Erdmann" for "Foreign Language" category at the Oscars
Maren Ade's third feature film, "Toni Erdmann", that premiered in this year's Cannes' competition and was funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, was selected to represent Germany at the 2017 Oscars in the category "Best Foreign-language Film". The decision was made by an independent jury that praised the film as "modern, international cinema"! The comedy about the complicated relationship between a career-driven woman and her funny and laid-back father, already earned critical acclaim at the 69th Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the prestigious FIPRESCI-Award. The FIPRESCI "Grand Prix" for "Film of the Year" will also honor "Toni Erdmann" at the 2016 San Sebastián's International Film Festival .
If Maren Ade's film will gain a final nomination at the 2017 Oscars is up to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The organization will announce its 2017 shortlist of foreign language nominees on January 17, 2017. The final five nominees will be announced on January 24th, 2017. The 2017 Oscars will be held at Dolby Theatre on February 26th, 2017.
