Medienboard-funded drama “A Fantastic Woman” wins Oscar for best foreign film

Berlin/Potsdam/Los Angeles – Congratulations! The Medienboard-funded transgender drama “A Fantastic Woman”, by Chilean director and occasional Berlin resident Sebastián Lelio, has taken home an Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film!

Medienboard Managing Director Kirsten Niehuus said: “Fantastic! After numerous international awards, now the Oscar for best foreign film – that’s as good as it gets! Our warmest congratulations to the team working with Sebastián Lelio, who completed the film in Berlin and also lives here from time to time. We are delighted that Berlin-based ‘Toni Erdmann’ producers Komplizen Film had a film in the Oscar running for the second time in a row, and this time brought it home to Berlin with ‘A Fantastic Woman’! Congratulations also go to Babelsberg special-effects expert Gerd Nefzer for the Best Visual Effects Oscar for ‘Blade Runner 2049.’ Germany’s capital region provides the inspiration for first-class international art-house and blockbuster cinema!”

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller added: “The Berlin-Brandenburg film region attracts cinematic talents, offers excellent professional production conditions, and provides outstanding funding for films. This year’s Oscar night showed this once again. Congratulations to the foreign-film Oscar winners, congratulations to Sebastiàn Lelio’s team, and congratulations to Gerd Nefzer in the name of Berlin, the film city. And this year too, I would like to expressly congratulate the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg. Thank you for the excellent work, and I wish you continued great success.”

On the night before the Oscar awards, “A Fantastic Woman” also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film. The transgender drama is a joint Chilean-German-Spanish-U.S. co-production. Berlin-based production firm Komplizen Film took part on the German side.
