Medienboard's support of INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN
Why is MBB funding #gamesweekberlin and other associated events of the #gamesweekberlin?
The Berlin-Brandenburg region has evolved into a major and very exciting hub for the digital-media and creative economy. The Medienboard provides ongoing support for this trend through the funding of innovative audiovisual content, including networking and professional-development events. In April, thanks to the efforts of #gamesweekberlin, Berlin becomes the games-industry capital. We have supported this event since its beginning; indeed, the predecessor to International Games Week Berlin, German Games Days, was even initiated by the Medienboard in 2007. With the aim of facilitating networking throughout the segment, and of strengthening Berlin’s international influence as a games-industry hotspot, the Medienboard also endorses numerous important events over the course of the week, including the Opening Summit, Europe’s leading developer conference QUO VADIS - Game Developers Conference; indie-game festival A MAZE./ Berlin; the Gamefest of Computerspielemuseum and the Matchmaking Dinner.
Why is Berlin-Brandenburg a good place for the game industry?
Throughout the whole year not simply during #gamesweekberlin the capital region is Germany’s most dynamic location for the games industry. About 1,500 companies with a total of more than 11,400 employees collectively generate about €1 billion in annual revenue. In addition to the successful national and international game-developments companies located in the region, there are numerous influential institutes, organizations, and networks. The region additionally offers a wealth of excellent educational opportunities, with Berlin-Brandenburg considered to be a key games-research centre and a stronghold of the indie game- developer scene. The Medienboard’s Innovative Audiovisual Content (IAI) funding program has contributed to the region’s innovative character since 2006. With an annual budget of €2 million, Medienboard funds the development and production of games, transmedia, virtual reality, and other innovative games-industry events. The increasing numbers of applications for the IAI, along with three nominations for the renowned German Computer Games Awards aka Deutscher Computerspielpreis, attest to the funding program’s success.
What are your highlights of the #gamesweekberlin?
I really appreciate the diverse focus of the events, ranging from the manufacturing industry’s games know-how to virtual reality’s intangible future prospects. There are business events for exclusive audiences and fun events for hard-core gamers and whole families. I´m looking forward to visiting #QuoVadis again. As one of Europe's most important games-developer conference, it always offers its participants an excellent conference program. A MAZE./Berlin is an annual highlight for the international indie- games scene. Gamefest’s program covers everything related to game culture, and of course the Matchmaking Dinner is a vital networking opportunity for the most important decision-makers in the games, information, communications, and technology industries, as well as for key figures from politics and other institutions. By visiting these events I’´ll get a good overview of the current trends in the game scene – and have a lot of fun, of course!
