Berlin/Potsdam/Cannes – Congratulations to director Maren Ade and the Berlin-based producers from Komplizen Film: The Medienboard-funded production "Toni Erdmann" has been accepted into competition in the Cannes international film festival! The father-daughter drama features Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek in its leading roles.

With this selection, Maren Ade becomes the first female German director since Margarethe von Trotta (“Paura e amore”, 1988) to have a film in the running for the Golden Palm!

In addition, Bruno Dumont’s Medienboard-funded, Franco-German comedy "Ma Loute", produced by Thanassis Karathanos’ Berlin-based Twenty Twenty Vision Filmproduktion, will celebrate its world premiere in Competition at Cannes. The top-notch ensemble walking the red carpet for this film includes Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, and Fabrice Luchini.

“As co-funders, we are extraordinarily pleased for – and along with – Komplizen Film, Twenty Twenty Vision, and the teams from 'Toni Erdmann' and 'Ma Loute'," said Medienboard Managing Director Kirsten Niehuus. "We’ll toast these great successes at our reception* in Cannes, and say with pride: Women directors belong on the Croisette!"

The programmes for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs and the Semaine de la Critique film series will be made public at the beginning of next week .

*The Medienboard reception in Cannes, which will be held on Saturday 14 May, is a coproduction of ILB, Studio Babelsberg, Unverzagt von Have, and the Medienboard.
