Medienboard supports the diversity of Berlin-Brandenburg cinema with 1.5 million euros

Berlin / Potsdam - With an award amount totalling 1.5 million euros, MBB honours and supports the unique diversity of cinemas in the capital region and recognises the cinema operators for their high levels of commitment with programming, audience contact and care, development of the cinema and cinema location!

The 67 best cinemas with dedicated programmes will be honoured with the Cinema Programme Award 2023: 42 outstanding cinemas from BERLIN will receive awards of 980,000 euros in total and 25 unique cinemas from BRANDENBURG will gain awards amounting to 490,000 euros. The maximum awards for ‘Excellent Services’ consist again of 40,000 euros.

The award ceremony, moderated by Kino King (cinema king) Knut Elstermann, will take place at the Katerschmaus restaurant on the banks of the Spree in the presence of Wolf Plesmann (Berlin Senate Chancellery), MBB Managing Director Kirsten Niehuus and KPP jury member Lysann Windisch (MUBI). Medienboard’s long-standing cinema commissioner Christian Berg will hand over his office from the end of 2023 onwards to successor Jan-Eike Michaelis following a transitional phase.

Many congratulations to the winners of the Berlin & Brandenburg Cinema Programme Awards! (PDF downloads)

Wolf Plesmann, Berlin Senate Chancellery:

“Berlin is proud of its extraordinary diversity of cinemas which are an important part of our unique cultural landscape. Supporting and preserving these is of high importance to the Senate, and that’s why Berlin-Brandenburg is again supporting its arthouse cinemas with 1.5 million euros, which in a state-wide comparison is the highest total, and will continue to actively support the excellent cinemas and their programme makers in the future.”

Kirsten Niehuus, CEO Film Funding, MBB:

“We honour the cinema and the operators of the award-winning cinemas in Berlin and Brandenburg for their passionate commitment. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to Christian Berg, who, as cinema commissioner for the capital region, was the point of contact for cinema operators for 20 years with much personal commitment, and who’s retiring at the end of the year. Taking over the reins as cinema commissioner will be Jan-Eike Michaelis. Cinema diversity will remain a major concern for us in the future because we firmly believe: only cinema can do what cinema can do!”

Christian Berg, MBB Commissioner for Cinemas:

“The past cinema year was marked by at times astonishingly good attendance figures, but also by the effort to win back the cinema audience. Some have struggled, and many have vied for the public’s favour. Summing up, it’s ultimately very pleasing that the cinema landscape in Berlin-Brandenburg has not lost a single cinema. That by itself is a big plus.”

The KPP jury 2023: Matthias Elwardt (Hamburg cinema operator and jury chairman), Karen von Fehrn-Stender (Rendsburg cinema operator), Jörg Taszman (film journalist), Lysann Windisch (MUBI), Christian Berg (MBB) and Jan-Eike Michaelis (MBB)
