2 German Developer Awards for “Through the Darkest of Times"

PRESS RELEASE

Berlin / Potsdam – Award to the power of 2 for the Medienboard-funded game “Through the Darkest of Times”. At today’s German Developer Awards ceremony, Berlin-based studio Paintbucket Games was awarded for its resistance strategy game in the categories “Best Story” and “Best Indie Game”. “TTDOT” is about the formation of a resistance group in the Third Reich with the aim of weakening the Nazi regime. Paintbucket Games, part of the Kreuzberg-based indie game collective Saftladen, was founded by two former AAA developers, Jörg Friedrich and Sebastian Schulz, to be able to develop more socio-politically relevant games.

Helge Jürgens, Medienboard managing director for new media funding: “2 German Developer Awards for Berlin, we congratulate the whole team at Paintbucket Games on their double success! A success that didn’t just become apparent today, but had already been evidenced by a great public interest in this special game, by many positive reviews in the gaming community as well as in the international press. A well-deserved award for a game that struck a chord and made a political statement!”

Another award for the German capital: “High Rise” by smpl Games wins in the “Best Mobile Game” category.

The German Developer Award is the oldest award for the development of outstanding computer games from German-speaking countries. Originally scheduled to be held as a gala in December 2020, the awards ceremony was now held for the first time as a live streamed digital show on January 20, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fabian Siegismund, Lara “Loft” Trautmann, Daniel “Budi” Budiman and Valentina Birke guided the audience through the 15 categories.
