An important step for games funding in Berlin-Brandenburg – MBB gets its own games funding guideline

PRESS RELEASE

Berlin / Potsdam – MBB has been funding outstanding projects for years as part of the Innovative Audio-Visual Content (IAI) funding programme. Now, a separate directive for the dynamically growing games sector has been drafted and approved by the European Commission. Starting in August, Medienboard will fund games projects on the basis of the new guideline and will provide a new fact sheet on how to apply.

With the creation of a separate funding programme for games, this area will be explicitly anchored in the Medienboard’s funding portfolio in and for the future.

Jörg Steinbach, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy of the State of Brandenburg:
“The German capital region is on its way to becoming a high-tech hub! Virtual film and series productions that draw on games technologies, virtual and augmented reality, and cross-media content are important drivers of cutting-edge technologies in Brandenburg. That is why, with full confidence, we have submitted the Games Funding Directive to the EU Commission. After the approval from Brussels, we now also see a great opportunity for new value creation chains in other sectors, in addition to the positive development of the gaming industry.”

Stephan Schwarz, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises of the State of Berlin:
“The games industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the creative industries in Berlin. The funding increase and the new games funding guideline provide a strong push forward for the media industry in the German capital region! Games are not only an important cultural asset, but also an innovation engine and economic factor. Just how much power is contained in Berlin’s games companies already today can be experienced at gamescom, for example, at the joint trade fair stand of the German capital region. I am pleased that we, as the State of Berlin, are continuing to strengthen this sector and to fund its opportunities for growth. This creates incentives for new business establishments and also pays off for other industries.”

Helge Jürgens, CEO New Media Funding at Medienboard:
“The projects we are funding in the area of games are characterised by diversity, innovativeness, and creativity. Our funding was able to contribute to the development of a globally recognised indie scene here. I am therefore pleased about the new Games Directive: It can significantly raise the potential of the industry and establish the German capital region as Germany’s No. 1 games location in the long term.”

Next submission deadline for new media funding: October 4, 2022
