Berlin / Potsdam – Movies and series are no longer conceivable without visual effects (VFX). Since 2020, MBB has therefore also been supporting digital film production, enabling the promotion of VFX work in prolific productions such as “The Hunger Game – The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”,“The Swarm”, which opens the Berlinale Series, the successful production on Netflix “The Empress”, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” with more than 3 million viewers, the internationally successful series “Babylon Berlin 4” and the viewers’ favourites with animal characters “Die Känguru Verschwörung” and “Die Schule der magischen Tiere”. In turn, this has created high-tech jobs in the region.

Due to the positive development of the VFX location, the state of Berlin has increased funding for this support programme to a total of 9 million euros for the next two years. At the same time, the maximum funding amount per project was increased from 500,000 euros to up to 1 million euros.

Kirsten Niehuus, Managing Director of Medienboard: “We would like to thank the Berlin Senate. It has sent an important signal with continuation and an increase in funding for digital film production to make sure that Berlin remains both internationally competitive and holistically attractive as a film and series location – and also in the high-tech area of VFX production.”
