MBB updates guidelines for digital film production

Berlin / Potsdam - After three years of successful VFX funding, MBB will further revise the guidelines for digital film production in July 2024.

The following changes will simplify the application process: a flat rate for general project-related costs will be introduced, and the previously defined minimum threshold for subsequent funding increases will be removed. Terminology is now more clearly defined, and detailed questions regarding the combination of production and digital film production funding are uniformly regulated.

Key points:

👉 The funding amount can be increased once during the course of the project, up to a maximum of €1 million, subject to availability of funds. This now applies to all projects, not just those with minimum expenditures of €3.5 million at the time of application.
👉 The calculation of general project-related costs can either be done with a flat rate (up to 25%) or through a detailed calculation with a final cost report based on an audited business analysis.
👉 The costs of digital production are considered equivalent to those of traditional production. A digital shooting day is treated the same as a regular shooting day.
👉 The aforementioned provisions apply accordingly to digital film production in Brandenburg.

Background:

To date, the VFX program has supported 37 projects with a regional investment volume exceeding €50 million. This includes both German productions such as Chantal im Märchenland, Das Licht, Hameln, Die Kaiserin 2, and Momo, as well as high-budget international productions like Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, all made possible through the VFX funding program.
