We love cinematic diversity! EUR 1.5 million for the Berlin-Brandenburg Cinema Programme Award!

PRESS RELEASE

Berlin / Potsdam – With a total of EUR 1.5 million, MBB is providing top prizes for the Berlin-Brandenburg Cinema Programme Awards for the 3rd time.

The dedicated work, great perseverance and creativity of the film-makers during the challenging time of the pandemic are recognised with financial rewards of EUR 10,000 to 40,000.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Cinema Programme Awards ceremony will take place on June 7th, 2022 at the Katerschmaus restaurant on the Spree river. Application documents can be submitted until April 29th.

Kirsten Niehuus, CEO Film Funding, MBB: “A big thank you to all the cinemas who fought for great cinema on the big screen despite the short playing season and the extensive hygiene requirements. This was the only way to preserve the unique diversity of cinemas in the German capital region, and with the prizes for the Cinema Programme Awards, we want to help ensure that this remains the case in the future. Because only cinema can do what cinema can do!”

Dr. Christian Bräuer, Chairman of the Guild of German Cinematic Art Theaters, AG Kino: “The German capital region has the most exciting and vibrant art house cinema landscape in the world. The fact that Medienboard and the German states of Berlin and Brandenburg are once again supporting their art house cinemas with the significant sum of EUR 1.5 million is a strong signal for cinematic diversity. The past year has posed challenges to film-makers like no other, which is why we are all the more grateful for the great commitment.”

MBB Cinema Commissioner Christian Berg: “The cinemas were only able to really take off again in the middle of 2021. The commitment with which they have done this is remarkable. The jury therefore has a gratifying amount of work ahead of them to reward the inventiveness, diversity and perseverance with which cinemas have reclaimed their audiences.”
